The backstory.

I love a simple summer recipe that looks colorful without requiring a ton of work, and this fruit salad has become one of my go-to dishes for warm weather gatherings. The mix of fresh flavors keeps it feeling fresh and a little unexpected. It's easy, healthy, and always one of the first bowls emptied at a summer BBQ or Fourth of July party.

It's a must-make.

Fresh, colorful, crunchy, and loaded with summer flavor, red white and blue fruit salad is one of those recipes that works for everything from backyard BBQs to holiday parties.

  • It's unexpectedly crunchy. The jicama adds the perfect crisp texture that makes this fruit salad extra satisfying and unique.
  • It's bright and refreshing. Fresh lime juice, mint, and basil keep every bite light, fresh, and summery.
  • It doubles as a side dish or dessert. This patriotic party dish fits right in next to burgers at a BBQ or beside dessert at a summer gathering.
  • It's naturally healthy. Loaded with fresh fruit, herbs, and a light honey lime dressing, this is one of those feel-good recipes you'll actually crave.

This salad tastes like summer picnic weather in a bowl.

Let's talk texture and flavor.

Every bite brings a little sweet, salty, juicy, and crisp goodness. The strawberries and blueberries bring juicy sweetness, while the feta cheese adds a salty creamy bite that keeps things interesting. Crisp jicama gives the salad an addictive crunch, and the mint plus basil make everything taste extra fresh and vibrant. The honey lime dressing lightly coats every bite with sweet citrus flavor without making the salad heavy or soggy.

What you'll need.

Ingredients for red white and blue fruit salad on a white countertop.

Here's what your going to need to make honey lime fruit salad.

  • Strawberries: Fresh sliced strawberries add sweetness, color, and classic summer flavor to this healthy fruit salad.
  • Blueberries: Juicy blueberries bring freshness, texture, and that patriotic red white and blue look.
  • Jicama: Crisp jicama adds refreshing crunch and keeps the salad extra light and crisp.
  • Feta cheese: Crumbled feta cheese gives this salad a salty creamy contrast that makes every bite pop.
  • Lime juice: Fresh lime juice brightens everything up and balances the sweetness beautifully.
  • Honey: A little honey lightly sweetens the dressing and ties all the flavors together.
  • Extra-virgin olive oil: Helps create a smooth light honey lime dressing.
  • Sea salt: Just enough to balance and enhance the fruit flavors.
  • Black pepper: Adds a tiny savory kick that works surprisingly well here.
  • Mint: Fresh mint gives this summer salad an ultra-refreshing finish.
  • Basil: Basil adds a slightly sweet herbal flavor that makes the whole dish feel fresh and elevated.

If you're anything like me, summer meals usually turn into one long rotation of fresh salads, easy side dishes, and anything that keeps the oven off. Recipes like Watermelon Arugula Salad with Feta, Grilled Peach Salad with Burrata, and a classic Easy Fruit Salad always end up on repeat around here because they feel fresh without being fussy. And when strawberry season hits, I can never resist making a Fresh Strawberry Goat Cheese Salad Recipe for an easy lunch or light dinner. Honestly, there's just something about sweet fruit, creamy cheese, and fresh herbs that tastes like summer done right.

Customize it your way.

A good 4th of July fruit salad is easy to tweak depending on what's in season or what you already have in the fridge.

  • Add raspberries for even more red white and blue color.
  • Toss in cucumber for extra crunch and freshness.
  • Swap the basil for cilantro for a slightly different herbal flavor.
  • Use goat cheese instead of feta for a creamier tangy bite.
  • Add watermelon cubes for extra juicy summer flavor.
  • Sprinkle in chopped pistachios or almonds for added crunch.

Flexible dietary swaps.

A few simple swaps can easily make this red white and blue fruit salad work for different dietary needs without losing its fresh summer flavor.

  • Dairy-Free: Use your favorite plant-based feta cheese or simply leave the feta out for a lighter fruit-forward version.
  • Vegan: Swap the honey for maple syrup and use a dairy-free feta alternative.
  • Lower Sodium: Reduce the feta cheese or skip the added sea salt if you're watching sodium levels.

How to make this 4th of July fruit salad recipe.

Making red white and blue fruit salad couldn't be easier - just toss, drizzle, and serve.

  1. Add the strawberries, blueberries, jicama, feta cheese, mint, and basil to a large serving bowl.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together the lime juice, honey, olive oil, sea salt, and black pepper until smooth.
  3. Pour the honey lime dressing over the fruit mixture.
  4. Gently toss everything together until evenly coated, then chill or serve immediately.

How to serve it.

Cold, fresh, and colorful, red white and blue fruit salad fits right in at cookouts, summer dinners, and patriotic parties.

  • Serve it as a refreshing side dish with grilled chicken, burgers, seafood, or BBQ favorites.
  • Pair it with lemonade, iced tea, or sparkling water for the ultimate summer meal.
  • Add it to your Memorial Day or patriotic Fourth of July spread for a bright healthy option among the heavier dishes.
  • Spoon leftovers over greens for an easy lunch salad the next day.

Kori's tips.

  • Cut the jicama small. Smaller pieces give you the best crunchy texture in every bite.
  • Add the herbs last. Fresh mint and basil stay brighter and fresher when added right before serving.
  • Serve it chilled. A cold fruit salad tastes extra refreshing on hot summer days.
  • Toss gently. Soft berries can break down quickly, so a light toss keeps everything looking fresh.
  • Use ripe strawberries. Sweet juicy berries balance perfectly with the lime juice and salty feta cheese.

FAQ's

What's the best way to store it?

Store the fruit salad in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. For the freshest texture, add the herbs right before serving.

Can I make this ahead of time?

Yes! You can prep all the ingredients ahead of time and store them separately. Toss everything together with the honey lime dressing just before serving.

What does jicama taste like?

Jicama has a mild slightly sweet flavor with a crisp crunchy texture similar to an apple or water chestnut. It's super refreshing in summer salads.
