The backstory.

I've always been a fan of that sweet-and-spicy combination. Whether it's drizzled over chicken, salmon, or roasted vegetables, hot honey is one of those simple ingredients that makes a meal feel a little more special. After buying it a few times at the store, I realized how easy it was to make at home with ingredients I already had in my pantry. Now I keep a jar on hand whenever I need an easy way to add flavor to dinner.

xoxo Kori

It's a must-make.

A good hot honey recipe doesn't need to be complicated, and this one proves it.

  • Big flavor from simple ingredients. A handful of pantry staples creates a sweet and spicy sauce you'll want to put on everything.
  • Easy to customize. Make it mild, extra spicy, smoky, or tangy depending on what you're serving.
  • Perfect for healthy meals. A small drizzle adds tons of flavor to chicken, salmon, roasted vegetables, grain bowls, and salads.
  • Ready in minutes. No special equipment, complicated steps, or long ingredient list required.

Sweet, spicy, and ready in minutes? That's my kind of condiment.

Let's talk texture and flavor.

The honey is smooth, glossy, and perfectly drizzle-able. The sweetness comes first, followed by a gentle kick from the red pepper flakes and a hint of smoky flavor from the paprika. It's sweet, spicy, and balanced - enough heat to wake up your taste buds without overpowering whatever you're serving it with.

What you'll need.

Here's what your going to need to make this hot honey sauce recipe.

  • Honey: The base of this honey sauce recipe. Use your favorite honey or raw honey for a little extra depth of flavor.
  • Crushed red pepper flakes: These pepper flakes infuse the honey with spicy flavor. Adjust the amount depending on your heat preference.
  • Smoked paprika: Adds a subtle smoky note that pairs beautifully with the sweet honey and red pepper.
  • Apple cider vinegar: Brightens the sauce and balances the sweetness.
  • Kosher salt: Just a tiny pinch helps bring all the flavors together.

If you love the sweet-spicy magic of hot honey, don't stop here. My Hot Honey Whipped Cream Cheese Dip is creamy, tangy, and perfect for spreading, while Hot Honey Grilled Watermelon proves that a drizzle of sweet heat can completely transform fresh summer fruit. They're both easy, unexpected, and guaranteed to keep your hot honey obsession going strong.

Customize it your way.

This recipe for hot honey sauce is easy to customize depending on your mood or what you're serving it with.

  • Swap the cider vinegar for lime juice for a brighter, citrusy flavor.
  • Add a pinch of chipotle powder for a smoky spicy sauce.
  • Stir in a little hot sauce after warming for extra tang and heat.
  • Add a grated garlic clove while the honey warms for a savory twist.
  • Increase the red pepper flakes if you prefer a bolder spicy honey.

Flexible dietary swaps.

One of my favorite things about this hot honey recipe is how easy it is to adapt to different dietary needs.

  • Refined Sugar-Free: Use raw honey instead of highly processed honey.
  • Mild Heat: Start with 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes and taste before adding more.

How to make this recipe for hot honey sauce.

My hot honey recipe comes together quickly and couldn't be easier.

  1. Add the honey, red pepper flakes, smoked paprika, and salt to a small saucepan.
  2. Warm everything over low heat until fragrant and infused. Avoid boiling the honey.
  3. Remove from the heat and stir in the apple cider vinegar.
  4. Let the mixture rest for several minutes so the flavors can develop, then strain if desired and serve.

How to use it.

A little hot honey recipe goes a long way when it comes to adding flavor to everyday meals.

  • Drizzle over grilled chicken, fried chicken, or crispy chicken wings.
  • Spoon over salmon or shrimp for a sweet-and-spicy finish.
  • Add to roasted vegetables like Brussels sprouts, carrots, or sweet potatoes.
  • Drizzle over pizza, flatbreads, or avocado toast.
  • Pair with cheeses like feta or goat cheese on a snack board.
  • Add a little to fresh fruit, peaches, berries, or even ice cream for a sweet and spicy treat.
  • Stir into grain bowls or salads for extra flavor.

Kori's tips.

  • Warm it gently. Keep the heat low. Boiling honey can change the flavor and isn't necessary for infusion.
  • Start with less spice. It's easy to add more heat, but impossible to take it away.
  • Let it sit. A few extra minutes allows the spicy flavor to infuse throughout the honey.
  • Leave the flakes in. The honey will continue developing flavor as it sits.
  • Make extra. This sauce disappears quickly once everyone discovers how good it is on chicken, wings, and roasted vegetables.

FAQ's

What's the best way to store it?

Store cooled hot honey in an airtight container or glass jar at room temperature. It will keep for several weeks.

Can I freeze it?

Freezing isn't necessary. Honey naturally has a long shelf life and stores best at room temperature.

How spicy is hot honey?

The heat level depends on how many red pepper flakes you use. Start with less if you're sensitive to spice, then adjust to taste.

Why shouldn't I boil the honey?

Keeping the honey over low heat preserves its flavor and allows the spices to infuse gently without becoming harsh.

Kori's Tips

For more helpful hints, substitution ideas, cooking tips, and other delicious recipes check out my post above.
TIPS: Warm the honey gently over low heat - don’t boil it or the flavor can become harsh. Start with less red pepper if you prefer mild heat, then adjust to taste. Let the honey sit for a few minutes before serving so the spicy flavor has time to infuse.
VARIATIONS: Use lime juice instead of apple cider vinegar for a brighter summer flavor. Add chipotle powder for smoky heat, or stir in a little hot sauce for extra tang. For a savory twist, add a small grated garlic clove while warming.
SERVING SUGGESTIONS: Drizzle over grilled chicken, salmon, roasted vegetables, pizza, avocado toast, fruit salad, or whipped cottage cheese bowls. It’s especially delicious paired with feta, fresh herbs, berries, peaches, and summer salads.
