You'll ❤️ Blueberry Barbecue Sauce

"One of my go-to bbq sauces! If you're willing, try the healthier reduced sugar (keto) version, no one will know the difference. It's not your average ho-hum bbq sauce - it's unique & tasty, and a great conversation starter when everyone realizes you've used blueberries." 🙂

Want more unique and tasty barbecue sauces? Be sure to try this Sweet BBQ Sauce Recipe and if you love fruit, Peach or Strawberry BBQ Sauce. If you're into tangy sauce, then this Carolina Gold BBQ Sauce is a must.

Make ahead. This bbq sauce can keep for up to 1 week in the refrigerator or up to 3 months in the freezer.

Delicious! Thick and rich and a combination of sweet, savory, tangy, and mildly spicy. It's SO tasty!

Healthy. Make it sugar free, lower in carbs, and keto-friendly by using a brown sugar substitute such as gold allulose and sugar-free ketchup.

Blueberry Jalapeno BBQ Sauce Ingredients

  • Olive oil
  • Jalapeno - leave the seeds for extra spiciness or remove them to tame the heat.
  • Red onion - use red onion for the sweetness it provides.
  • Ketchup - use regular or sugar free ketchup.
  • Dijon mustard - has a little more of a kick than other mustards. Use stone-ground mustard for a little more sweetness!
  • Brown sugar - either light or dark work just fine. You can also use a brown sugar substitute.
  • Rice wine vinegar - apple cider vinegar works great also!
  • Blueberries - fresh blueberries are best in thsi recipe
  • Tobasco sauce - known for its pepperiness and spiciness. Sambal oelek, or sriracha also work.
  • Kosher Salt
  • Pepper

How To Make Blueberry BBQ Sauce

Prep and saute

Heat the olive oil in a sauce pot over medium heat and saute onions and jalapeno until translucent or tender.

Marry the ingredients to create something magical

Add the remaining ingredients and bring to a gentle simmer. Continue to cook the sauce, stirring frequently, until it has reduced and thickened, about 30 to 35 minutes.

Puree and serve

Remove from heat and let cool slightly. Transfer to a blender and puree until smooth. Make sure to cover the blender so you don't make a mess!

What To Serve with Blueberry BBQ Sauce

Here are a few ways to serve this blueberry barbecue sauce recipe:

  • Meal idea! Make my Grilled Chicken Drumsticks and slather the sauce after cooking, serve with a fresh green salad and potato salad.
  • Burger idea! Serve it over my Peanut Butter Burger with Bacon. Your family will go nuts!!
  • Serve this sauce on chicken thighs, drumsticks, chicken breast, grilled pork tenderloin, ribs, salmon, or on other fish.
  • Southwestern-style chicken bacon sandwich - layer this sauce, chicken, bacon, pepper jack cheese, and a tablespoon of our chipotle crema.

Variations

  • Spicy - If the jalapeno and hot sauce don't provide enough heat for you, feel free to add chili flakes or a tablespoon of our chipotle powder to the sauce during the cooking process. You can whisk either of these spices into the sauce to taste.
  • Make it a blueberry bourbon sauce by adding 1 tablespoon (or more to taste) of bourbon, after the sauce has thickened.
  • Maple syrup - in place of brown sugar is an excellent addition as a natural sweetener. Molasses is another great sweetener.
  • Substitute other fruit in place of the blueberries - blackberries, raspberries, cranberries, peaches, and mangos, are great examples.
  • Make it keto - Substitute allulose gold for the brown sugar or any other sweetener you may desire, and sugar free ketchup.

Best Blueberry BBQ Sauce Tips

  • Gently simmer the sauce, stirring frequently. Over-simmering or boiling sauces with sugar can easily burn. Cook until just thickened. Allow the sauce to cool slightly before blending or tasting it.
  • Always make sure to cover the blender before turning it on so no messes are made.
  • Thoroughly wash your hands after dicing raw jalapenos - or better yet, wear gloves. The oils can transfer to your eyes or skin and burn!
