The backstory.

Baked chicken drumsticks have been in my dinner rotation for years. They're budget friendly, family friendly, and I almost always have the ingredients on hand. A little olive oil and the right mix of pantry spices turn basic chicken legs in oven into something golden brown, crispy, and perfectly seasoned every time.

It's a must-make.

These baked chicken legs are the kind of weeknight dinner that feels effortless but delivers big.

  • Crispy skin, tender inside. The high heat creates that golden brown, crispy finish while keeping the meat juicy and never dry.
  • Simple seasoning, bold flavor. Garlic, Paprika, Oregano, Onion, and Pepper come together with olive oil for perfectly seasoned, savory chicken.
  • Healthy and high protein. Bone in, skin on chicken is naturally low carb, gluten free, sugar free, and has no added sugar - just real food.
  • Budget friendly and family friendly. Baked chicken drumsticks are affordable and always a crowd pleaser.

"This is proof that basic ingredients can still bring bold flavor."

Let's talk texture and flavor.

The skin bakes up crispy and golden brown with that satisfying crunch, while the inside stays juicy and tender. The olive oil helps the seasoning coat every curve of the drumsticks so each bite is flavorful and savory. Smoked paprika adds warmth, garlic and oregano bring depth, and a touch of onion and pepper rounds everything out. It's comforting, balanced, and exactly what oven baked chicken should taste like.

What you'll need.

ingredients needed for baked chicken legsPin

Here's what your going to need to make easy oven baked chicken legs.

  • Chicken legs (drumsticks): Bone in, skin on for the best texture and juicy chicken drumsticks.
  • Extra virgin olive oil: Helps the skin crisp up and keeps the meat tender.
  • Garlic salt: Adds savory depth and enhances flavor.
  • Smoked paprika: Brings warmth and that subtle smoky note.
  • Dried parsley: A light herbal touch.
  • Dried oregano: Earthy and classic with chicken.
  • Onion powder: Adds depth and rounds out the blend.
  • Ground black pepper: A little kick to finish it off.

If these baked chicken legs are hitting the spot, you'll probably fall hard for my wing recipes too. When you're craving something a little saucier or extra crispy, BBQ Wings, Garlic Parmesan Wings Air Fryer, and Lemon Pepper Wings Air Fryer bring that same bold flavor with a fun, snackable twist. And if you're more of a drumstick fan, Oven Baked BBQ Chicken Legs deliver that sweet, smoky, sticky goodness in a simple sheet pan dinner.

Customize it your way.

Crispy chicken legs in the oven are easy to switch up depending on what you're craving.

  • Swap in your favorite salted seasoning blend or dry rub.
  • Add a pinch of cayenne if you want a little heat.
  • Mix in chili powder for extra smoky flavor.
  • Finish with fresh herbs or a squeeze of lemon before serving.
  • Brush with a little extra olive oil before baking if you love extra crispy skin.
  • Use bone-in chicken parts such as breasts, thighs and wings. Breasts and thighs will take a little longer to cook, wings a little less.

Flexible dietary swaps.

Easy baked chicken legs are naturally flexible and easy to adapt.

  • Lower-Sodium: Replace the garlic salt with garlic powder and reduce or omit added salt. You'll still get plenty of flavor from the paprika, oregano, onion, and pepper.
  • Keto / Low Carb: This recipe is naturally low carb and keto friendly as written. Just skip any sugary sauces or glazes and stick with the simple seasoning blend.
  • Gluten-Free: These oven baked chicken legs are already gluten free since there's no breading or flour involved. Just double-check your spice labels to be safe.

How to make this recipe.

No complicated steps here - just simple seasoning, steady heat, and baked chicken legs that turn out perfectly every time.

  1. Brush the chicken legs all over with olive oil so they're lightly coated.
  2. Stir together the simple seasoning until evenly combined.
  3. Sprinkle generously over each drumstick, turning to coat both sides.
  4. Bake on a lined sheet pan for 35 to 40 minutes, until the internal temperature reaches 165 and the skin is crispy and golden brown.

How to enjoy them.

Oven baked chicken legs fit into just about any weeknight plan.

  • Garnish with chopped parsley or green onions for a fresh pop.
  • Serve with roasted vegetables and a simple side salad for a balanced dinner.
  • Pair with mashed cauliflower or roasted potatoes for cozy comfort.
  • Add to meal prep containers with rice and steamed broccoli for an easy high protein lunch.

Kori's tips.

  • Don't skip drying the chicken - moisture is the enemy of crispy skin.
  • Space the drumsticks out on the sheet pan so the air can circulate.
  • If the tops are browning too quickly, loosely cover with foil toward the end.
  • Use a meat thermometer - 165 is the magic number for juicy chicken.
  • For extra crispiness, flip the drumsticks halfway through baking.

FAQ's

What's the best way to store it?

Store leftover chicken legs in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

What's the best way to reheat it?

If you want that crispy skin back, skip the microwave. Reheat the chicken legs in a 375 degree oven for about 10 to 15 minutes, or until warmed through. An air fryer works beautifully too and brings the skin back to life in just a few minutes. The microwave is fine in a pinch, but the oven keeps the texture so much better.

How long to bake chicken legs at 400 degrees?

Plan on about 35 to 40 minutes, depending on size, until they reach an internal temperature of 165 and the skin is golden and crispy.

How do I make sure they don't dry out?

Use bone in, skin on drumsticks and avoid overbaking. A thermometer is your best friend for tender, juicy results.
