The backstory.

Tilapia is one of those easy proteins I like to keep on hand, especially for busy weeks. It cooks quickly, takes on flavor well, and works with just about anything. This parmesan crusted version came together one night when I wanted something simple but a little more interesting than plain fish - and it's been on repeat ever since.

xoxo Kori

It's a must-make.

Parmesan crusted tilapia is a go-to when you want something light, flavorful, and easy to get on the table.

  • Quick and easy. It comes together in about 15 minutes, making it perfect for busy weeknights.
  • Crispy without frying. The air fryer gives you that golden crust with less oil and no mess.
  • Healthy and high protein. With only 1 gram of net carbs, 10.7 grams of fat, and 30.2 grams of protein, it's a great low carb, high protein option that still feels like a real meal.
  • Simple ingredients. You only need a handful of everyday ingredients to make it work.

Simple ingredients, quick cook time, and it actually tastes good - that's always the goal around here.

Let's talk texture and flavor.

The first bite is all about that crispy, savory parmesan coating. It's lightly seasoned with Italian herbs, giving it a warm, familiar flavor that pairs perfectly with the mild, flaky fish. Inside, the tilapia stays tender and juicy, creating that perfect contrast between crisp edges and soft, delicate flakes.

What you'll need.

Ingredients needed for making parmesan crusted air fryer tilapiaPin

Here's what your going to need to make this parmesan crusted tilapia air fryer recipe.

  • Tilapia fillets: Mild, flaky, and perfect for air frying - they cook quickly and take on flavor easily.
  • Egg: Helps the coating stick to the fish for that perfect crust. Parmesan cheese: Finely grated for the best texture and that signature savory, crispy finish.
  • Italian seasoning: Adds a simple blend of herbs that brings everything together.
  • Pepper: A little kick to balance the richness of the cheese.
  • Salt: Enhances all the flavors - adjust based on your cheese and seasoning.
  • Olive oil spray: Helps crisp up the coating in the air fryer without extra heaviness.

If you're on an easy seafood kick right now, you've got plenty of good options to keep things interesting. These Air Fryer Salmon Patties are great when you want something quick and budget-friendly, while Baked Parmesan Crusted Halibut gives you that same crispy, cheesy vibe with a slightly richer fish. My Easy Parmesan Crusted Salmon Recipe is another go-to if you love bold flavor, and if you're feeling a little more classic, learning How To Make Crab Cakes in Air Fryer is always a solid move.

Customize it your way.

One of the best things about parmesan crusted tilapia in air fryer is how easy it is to switch things and customize.

  • Swap Italian seasoning for a mix of paprika and garlic powder for a different flavor profile.
  • Add a little lemon zest to the coating for a fresh, bright finish.
  • Use shredded parmesan for a slightly different texture.
  • Add a pinch of red pepper flakes if you like a little heat.
  • Try using different finely grated cheeses for something different.
  • Mix in a bit of almond flour if you want a thicker crust.

Flexible dietary swaps.

Parmesan crusted tilapia can easily be adjusted to fit a few different needs without losing too much flavor.

  • Dairy-free: Use a dairy-free parmesan alternative to keep the same crispy coating.
  • Lower sodium: Reduce added salt or use a lower sodium cheese if needed.
  • Egg-free: Try using a light brush of olive oil or a dairy-free milk alternative to help the coating stick.
  • Gluten free: This recipe is naturally gluten free as written.

How to make this recipe.

Getting parmesan crusted tilapia just right in the air fryer is quick and easy.

  1. Preheat your air fryer to 375 degrees.
  2. Combine parmesan, Italian seasoning, pepper, and salt in a bag or dish.
  3. Dip each fillet into the beaten egg, then coat evenly with the parmesan mixture.
  4. Place in the air fryer basket and spray lightly with oil.
  5. Cook for 5 minutes.
  6. Flip, spray again, and cook another 2 to 3 minutes until the fish flakes easily.

How to serve it.

Once your parmesan crusted tilapia is hot and crispy, it's ready to be the star of a simple, fresh meal.

  • With a squeeze of fresh lemon for a bright, simple finish
  • Alongside a crisp salad or roasted vegetables for an easy, balanced meal
  • Tucked into a tilapia sandwich with your favorite sauce
  • Served in tacos with slaw for a fresh, flavorful twist

Kori's tips.

  • Don't overcrowd the basket. Give the fillets space so they crisp up instead of steaming.
  • Spray lightly with oil. A quick spray helps create that golden, crispy coating.
  • Watch the cook time. Tilapia cooks fast, so keep an eye on it to avoid drying it out.
  • Check for doneness. The fish should be white, opaque, and flake easily with a fork at the thickest part. The USDA recommends cooking fish to 145-degrees F.

FAQ's

What's the best way to store it?

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Freezing is not recommended.

What's the best way to reheat it?

Reheat in the air fryer at 350 degrees for a few minutes to help bring back the crisp coating.

What temperature should tilapia be cooked to?

Tilapia should reach an internal temperature of 145 degrees F and be opaque and flaky in the thickest part.

Why is my tilapia mushy?

Mushy tilapia is usually from overcooking or starting with lower-quality fish. It can also happen if it's been frozen and thawed multiple times, over-marinated, or cooked at too low of a temperature. Fresh fish and proper cook time make a big difference here.
