The backstory.
Flashback - this shrimp dip brings back so many memories. I had an aunt who brought this dip to just about every family party, and without fail, it was always a hit. No one ever asked for the recipe because everyone already knew it, and it never needed explaining. Years later, I still make it for the same reasons she did - it's dependable, familiar, and comes together in minutes, proving that sometimes the simplest appetizers are the ones people remember most (and no, I won't say what decade that was).

This cold shrimp dip is a must make.
This cream cheese shrimp dip belongs in your rotation because it delivers classic, crowd-pleasing flavor with just three ingredients and almost no prep.
• Three ingredients. Cream cheese, cocktail sauce, and shrimp are all you need - nothing extra, nothing complicated.
• Three-minute prep. From fridge to table, this dip comes together fast with no cooking required.
• Cool and creamy. The layered texture keeps each bite smooth, balanced, and satisfying.
• Perfect for easy entertaining. Serve it straight from the dish with crackers or fresh vegetables and call it done.
Let's talk flavor and texture.
This cream cheese and shrimp dip is all about balance. The cream cheese creates a smooth, rich base, the cocktail sauce adds a tangy, slightly sweet contrast, and the shrimp bring tender texture with a mild briny finish. Because it's layered instead of mixed, every scoop delivers a clean, familiar bite.
This is the dip that instantly takes me back to family parties - and somehow still disappears just as fast today.
Shrimp dip recipe ingredients.

Making this dip keeps things refreshingly simple, relying on a short ingredient list that works together without overthinking.
- Cocktail Sauce: Adds tang and brightness. You can use a store-bought version you love, or make my homemade cocktail sauce for even better flavor - it's quick and easy.
- Canned Shrimp: Fully cooked and ready to use, keeping this an easy no-cook appetizer. Canned crabmeat or salmon could be substituted.
- Cream Cheese: Softened so it spreads easily and creates a smooth, creamy base.
- Optional for garnish: Optional garnishes like green onions or a small squeeze of lemon juice can be added for freshness, but the recipe works perfectly as written.
💡Tip: Make sure to use a favorite cocktail sauce that you've tested and love! With only three ingredients, this dip is only as good as your cocktail sauce.
Customize this shrimp cream cheese dip.
- This shrimp dip recipe is intentionally simple, but you can absolutely customize it depending on your pantry, your heat level, and your party vibe.
- Swap canned shrimp with cooked shrimp made from fresh shrimp or thawed frozen shrimp, chopped shrimp works best for scooping
- Swap shrimp with canned crabmeat for a classic seafood twist
- Swap shrimp with canned salmon if that's what you have on hand
- Swap cocktail sauce with chili sauce for a slightly different sweet-and-tangy flavor profile
- Swap plain cream cheese with chive cream cheese for an herby shortcut
- Add Old Bay seasoning into the cocktail sauce or sprinkle it over the top
- Make it spicy by stirring in hot sauce, cayenne, or chili pepper flakes
- Add a teaspoon worcestershire to the sauce layer for extra savory depth
- Add a spoonful of sour cream to the sauce layer if you want to mellow the tang and make it extra creamy

- For lower carb or keto: use a sugar-free cocktail sauce (homemade is easiest to control) and serve with veggies

I also use these ingredients, but
stir them together to become a
spread.
Wondering : could this be made ahead and frozen ?

Great idea that works too! I have not frozen this recipe, but I believe you could! Cream cheese is freezable and I don't see why the shrimp or cocktail sauce couldn't be either. Let me know!

I have had this recipe for a long time, but do it a bit differently. I buy a bag of small frozen shrimp, when I defrost I save the juice and mix it with the cream cheese to make it an easier spread on the plate. On top of that I sprinkle dry minced onion to cover and then the shrimp. I refrigerate over night and when ready to serve I top with cocktail sauce. Keeps it from being runny or mushy. So good!
