The backstory.

Buffalo wings were a staple in my kitchen for years—crispy, spicy, and always a crowd-pleaser. After falling in love with the cauliflower version, I couldn’t resist taking it one step further. Lately I’ve been on a serious tofu kick, so naturally, these buffalo tofu “wings” were next on the list. They’re crispy, plant-powered, and totally hit the spot—vegan, vegetarian, and packed with all the bold, tangy flavor I’ve always loved.

xoxo Kori

It's a must-make.

These spicy, crispy buffalo tofu bites check all the boxes for a delicious, healthy, and satisfying snack or meal—and here’s why:

  • Crispy and crave-worthy: the baked buffalo tofu coating stays crunchy outside and tender inside.
  • Loaded with bold, tangy flavor: every bite delivers that classic spicy buffalo kick.
  • Meatless magic: a satisfying, protein-rich alternative that tastes indulgent but fits your plant-based goals.
  • Totally customizable: go gluten-free, toss with extra buffalo sauce, or throw them in the air fryer for max crisp.

Same bold buffalo flavor—zero chicken required. These tofu wings are bringing the heat and the crunch!

Let’s talk texture and flavor.

One bite of these crispy buffalo tofu wings and you're hooked. The outside is shatteringly crisp, thanks to a coating of seasoned bread crumbs. The inside? Creamy, tender, and perfectly seasoned from the extra firm tofu. Then comes the kicker: a spicy buffalo sauce made with hot sauce, lemon, and melted vegan butter that coats every bite in zippy flavor. Dip into a cool vegan ranch or classic bleu cheese dressing for that perfect hot-meets-cool combo.

What you'll need.

Ingredients needed for making buffalo tofu on a white wooden board.

Here's what you’ll need to make these delicious buffalo tofu nuggets happen:

For the wings:

  • Extra Firm Tofu: you can also use super firm if you want to skip the pressing part- either hold the best shape and crisps nicely.
  • Cornstarch: helps keep the tofu extra dry and gives the breading something to cling to.
  • Milk: any milk of your choice works- we used plant-based milk to keep the recipe plant-based.
  • Standard Bread Crumbs: the key ingredient to give these their signature crispy buffalo "wing" texture. You can use panko breadcrumbs, but I feel it's almost too textured.
  • Oil Spray: used to help get that perfectly brown color and crispiness.
  • Seasonings: poultry seasoning, celery salt, kosher salt, and freshly ground black pepper.

For the sauce:

  • Optional: buy a bottle from the store instead of making your own.
  • Hot Sauce: any spice level of your choice will do!
  • Vegan Butter: this recipe is vegan, which is why we used vegan butter; if you aren't, you can use regular butter.
  • Lemon Juice: freshly squeezed is best for flavor, but you can use store-bought if it's easier.
  • Optional Sweetener: maple syrup or agave nectar. If not vegan, you can use honey.

Customize it your way.

Want to mix it up? Try adding or swapping a few ingredients to make this buffalo tofu recipe your own:

  • Add garlic powder or smoked paprika to the breadcrumb mix for extra flavor.
  • Add a tablespoon of nutritional yeast to the coating mixture for a subtle cheesy vibe.
  • Add a pinch of cayenne to the sauce for even more heat.
  • If you're making your own sauce, swap the agave or maple syrup with a bit of brown sugar for a deeper sweetness.
  • Top with chopped fresh herbs or green onions for a bright finish and freshness.
  • Use barbecue sauce instead of buffalo sauce for a smoky, sweet variation.

Flexible dietary swaps.

Here are some healthy alternatives for this buffalo tofu recipe:

  • Gluten Free: use gluten-free breadcrumbs.
  • Dairy Free: stick with plant-based milk (any kind), and pair with vegan ranch or dairy-free bleu cheese dressing.
  • Low Carb: skip the panko bread crumbs and use almond flour instead! It may have less crunch, but it still works! Also, use a sugar-free or low-carb hot sauce and omit or swap the sweetener with a sugar substitute.

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.

It’s best fresh, but yes—you can freeze the baked (unsauced) tofu nuggets in a single layer, then transfer to a freezer bag. Reheat in the oven or air fryer until crispy.

How do I reheat it?

Microwave: Quick, but softens the crisp—best for convenience.
Oven: Bake at 350ºF for 10 minutes to re-crisp.

Ingredients

  • 1 block extra firm tofu (drained and pressed between paper towels to remove excess water)
  • 6 tablespoons cornstarch
  • ⅓ cup milk of choice
  • ¾ cup standard-style bread crumbs
  • 1 teaspoon celery salt
  • ¾ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon poultry seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

To make your own buffalo sauce:

  • ¼ cup hot sauce
  • 1 tablespoon vegan butter
  • 1½ teaspoons lemon juice
  • optional: 1 teaspoon agave nectar, maple syrup, or honey

Instructions

  • Wrap tofu in paper towels and place a heavy object on top like a plate then a saucepan. Let drain for about 20-30 minutes before continuing.
  • Preheat air fryer to 400 ℉ or oven to 425 ºF. If using an oven, lightly grease a large rimmed baking sheet.
  • Using your hands, break the tofu into 1 to 1½" pieces.
  • In a shallow bowl mix together the breadcrumbs, poultry seasoning, celery salt, kosher salt, and black pepper.
  • Put the cornstarch in a second bowl and the plant milk in a third bowl.
  • Dip each tofu piece first into the starch, shaking off the excess. Dip into the milk and then roll in the breadcrumb mixture. Place the onto the prepared baking sheet and repeat with the remaining 'wings.'
  • Air fryer baking: Bake the prepared tofu in the air fryer for 12 to 15 minutes, turning halfway.
Oven baking: Bake in the oven for 20 minutes. Remove from the oven and turn the tofu wings over. Bake another 10 + minutes until they are golden and crispy.

Kori's Tips

Check out my post above for more helpful hints, substitution ideas, cooking tips, and other delicious recipes.
VARIATIONS: Try different buffalo sauces—mild, hot, or homemade—for the level of heat you love. Use gluten-free breadcrumbs if needed. Any plant-based milk works—soy, almond, oat, etc. If you're making your own sauce, agave or maple syrup keeps it vegan; use honey for a vegetarian option. Adjust the heat by choosing mild or spicy hot sauce to your taste.
TIPS:
  • Press the tofu well to remove moisture—it’s the key to a crispy texture.
  • Use one hand for the starch and bread crumbs and the other for the milk to keep breading from clumping on your fingers.
  • To keep these crisp, don’t overdo the sauce—drizzle, toss lightly, or serve it on the side.
  • Using an air fryer is the fastest method.
SERVING SUGGESTIONS: Serve warm with vegan ranch or dairy-free blue cheese, (or this dairy blue cheese dressing) plus crunchy celery and carrot sticks. Or pile into lettuce cups, top a salad, or add to grain bowls for a flavorful protein boost. Garnish with green onion or chopped herbs for extra freshness.
