The backstory.
Every summer I start keeping an eye out for green tomatoes because I can't wait to make these. Fried green tomatoes have always been one of those treats that disappear almost as fast as they're served, but I wanted a version that felt a little lighter without giving up that crispy coating. The air fryer turned out to be the perfect solution, and now it's the only way I make them.

It's a must-make.
If you've never made air fryer fried green tomatoes at home, you're in for a fun surprise. They're quick, crispy, and incredibly satisfying, making them perfect for everything from weeknight dinners to snacks and weekend cookouts.
- You still get that irresistible crunch. The seasoned breadcrumbs crisp up beautifully in the air fryer, creating a delicious golden crust without deep frying.
- It's a healthier twist on a classic. This healthier than traditional version uses very little oil while still delivering all the flavor and texture you expect.
- Perfect for summer meals. Tangy, tart green tomatoes pair beautifully with burgers, barbecue, grilled chicken, or your favorite dipping sauce.
This is my favorite way to use up any unripened tomatoes. The seasoned coating pairs well with the tartness of the tomatoes."
Let's talk texture and flavor.
The first bite is everything you hope for. The outside is crispy with savory parmesan cheese, Italian seasoning, and seasoned breadcrumbs, while the inside stays tender with that signature tart, tangy bite only green tomatoes can deliver. The contrast between the crunchy coating and the juicy tomato makes every bite completely satisfying.
What you'll need.

Here's what your going to need to make fried green tomatoes air fryer style.
- Green tomatoes: Firm green tomatoes hold up beautifully while cooking and provide that classic tart flavor.
- Flour: Helps the egg stick evenly to every slice.
- Egg: Acts as the binder for the breadcrumb coating.
- Panko breadcrumbs: Create the light, crispy coating everyone loves.
- Parmesan cheese: Adds a salty, nutty richness to the crust.
- Italian seasoning: Brings savory herb flavor to every bite.
- Salt: Enhances all of the flavors.

Customize it your way.
One of my favorite things about making fried green tomatoes in air fryer is how easy it is to customize the coating.
- Add a pinch of smoked paprika for a subtle smoky flavor.
- Stir a little garlic powder into the breadcrumb mixture.
- Swap parmesan cheese for grated Romano cheese.
- Add a pinch of cayenne pepper if you like a little heat.
Flexible dietary swaps.
Air fryer fried green tomatoes are easy to adapt depending on your dietary needs.
- Gluten-free: Use your favorite gluten-free flour and gluten-free panko.
- Dairy-free: Omit the parmesan cheese or replace it with your favorite dairy-free parmesan alternative.
- Vegetarian: This recipe is already vegetarian.
- Lower sodium: Reduce the salt and choose a lower-sodium parmesan cheese if desired.
How to make fried green tomatoes in air fryer.
Air fryer fried green tomatoes come together quickly, making them perfect whenever you're craving something crispy.
- Coat each tomato slice in flour, followed by egg, then the seasoned breadcrumb mixture.
- Arrange the coated tomatoes in a single layer inside the air fryer basket.
- Lightly spritz the tops with olive oil spray and cook until lightly browned.
- Flip the tomatoes, spray again if needed, and continue cooking until the coating is crispy and the tomatoes are tender.

How to enjoy them.
Air fryer fried green tomatoes are delicious fresh out of the air fryer while they're still nice and crispy.
- Garnish with chopped parsley or extra parmesan cheese before serving.
- Pair them with grilled burgers, sandwiches, barbecue, or grilled chicken.
- Serve alongside ranch, marinara, ketchup, or your favorite dipping sauce.
- Enjoy them as a quick afternoon snack or appetizer for summer gatherings.
- Add a few slices to a BLT or sandwich for extra crunch and flavor.
Kori's tips.
- Cook in a single layer. Giving each tomato slice a little space helps the coating get nice and crispy.
- Use room temperature tomatoes. Cold tomatoes will take longer to cook and the crust will get crisp and brown before the inside is tender.
- Adjust as you go. Every air fryer cooks a little differently, so check your first batch and tweak the cooking time if needed.
- Balance the tartness. If your green tomatoes are especially tangy, sprinkle them with just a pinch of sugar after cooking.
- Serve them right away. Fried green tomatoes are at their crispiest and most delicious straight from the air fryer.
- You can use partially ripened tomatoes or even ripened tomatoes. The more ripe the tomatoes, the faster they will cook. With a fully ripe tomato, you only need to be concerned with getting a golden crust; the insides are already soft enough.
- Use uniform slices. Try and slice your tomatoes the same thickness so they will cook in the same amount of time.
- Green tomatoes are tart. You can offset the tartness by sprinkling with additional sugar. There is some sugar added to the coating but depending upon the tartness of the tomato (some are very tart) you may need to add more.
