The backstory.

I'll admit it - I was fully hooked the first time I ordered a Starbucks cold foam coffee. That silky, slightly sweet layer on top? Game changer. But after a few too many coffee runs, I figured… why not make it at home? Turns out, it's ridiculously easy, and honestly, even better because you can tweak the sweetness, flavor, and keep things a little lighter if you want.

It's a must-make.

Sweet cream cold foam is one of those little upgrades that makes your everyday coffee feel like a treat.

  • It's easy. Just three ingredients and a couple of minutes are all you need to whip up this vanilla sweet cream cold foam recipe at home.
  • It feels fancy. You get that coffee shop vibe at home in minutes.
  • It's customizable. Adjust sweetness, skip the vanilla, or try different flavors.
  • It's a lighter indulgence. A small amount goes a long way for big flavor payoff.

One of my favorite things about cold brew is the foam. This is my take on Starbuck's vanilla cold foam. It's tastes amazing + it's quick and easy!

Let's talk texture and flavor.

Think creamy, airy, and just the right amount of sweet. This vanilla foam is light but still rich, with a smooth, velvety texture that slowly melts into your drink. That hint of vanilla adds warmth without overpowering, making every sip feel balanced and just a little indulgent.

What you'll need.

Here's what your going to need to make sweet cold foam.

  • Heavy cream: This is what creates that rich, creamy foam. Make sure it's very cold for the best texture.
  • Powdered sugar or sugar substitute: Blends in smoothly and adds just the right amount of sweetness. Swerve, monk fruit, erythritol, or allulose are my go to options.
  • Pure vanilla extract: Optional, but it gives that classic Starbucks-style vanilla flavor.

If you're loving this sweet cream cold foam, you've got to try a couple of my other coffee favorites. Honey Almond Milk Cold Brew is a lighter, naturally sweet option with a smooth, nutty flavor that's perfect for everyday sipping. And if you're in the mood for something a little more indulgent, this Chocolate Cream Cold Brew Recipe brings that rich, chocolatey coffeehouse vibe right into your kitchen-no line required.

Customize it your way.

This sweet vanilla cold foam recipe is super flexible, so have fun with it.

  • Swap vanilla extract for almond, mint, or coconut extract for a new flavor twist.
  • Use flavored syrups like caramel or hazelnut for a coffeehouse vibe.
  • Skip the sweetener entirely if you prefer an unsweetened cold foam.
  • Add a pinch of cinnamon or cocoa powder for a cozy flavor boost.
  • If you prefer it plain cold foam omit the vanilla.
  • Add 1 tablespoon of pumpkin puree for a cozy pumpkin cold foam.
  • Stir in 1 tablespoon of chocolate syrup for a rich chocolate version.

Flexible dietary swaps.

Sweet cream cold foam is easy to tweak based on what works for you, whether you're skipping sugar, dairy, or just using what you have on hand.

  • Dairy-Free: Use full-fat coconut cream or a barista-style oat creamer for a similar texture. Oat milk froths up like a dream in the electric milk frother.
  • Sugar-Free/Low Carb/Keto: Use a powdered sugar substitute like monk fruit or erythritol.
  • Lower Fat: Swap heavy cream for half-and-half for a lighter option (it will be slightly less thick).

How to make this sweet vanilla cold foam recipe.

Making homemade sweet cream cold foam at home is as simple as it gets - just a quick whip and you're ready to go.

  1. Pour cold heavy cream into a bowl, jar, or milk frother.
  2. Whip or froth just until it thickens into a soft, pourable foam.
  3. Add powdered sugar and vanilla, then give it a quick mix to combine.
  4. Stop once it's creamy and airy - you want it light, not stiff.

How to enjoy it.

Sweet cream cold foam is all about that finishing touch - here's how to make the most of it:

  • Spoon it gently over iced coffee or cold brew so it floats right on top.
  • Use it to finish iced lattes, chai, or matcha for an extra creamy layer.
  • Pair it with flavored coffees like caramel or mocha for a coffeehouse-style drink at home.
  • Pour it over iced liqueurs like Irish cream, RumChata, Baileys, or chocolate liqueur for an easy dessert-style drink.
  • Sweetened cold foam makes an amazing topping for berries or other fruit.
  • Stir it into smoothies for an extra creamy, lightly sweet boost.
  • Top off a glass of chocolate milk or strawberry milk for a simple treat.

Kori's tips.

  • Keep everything cold. Cold cream gives you the best foam every time.
  • Watch your texture. You're going for thick and pourable, not stiff like whipped cream.
  • Make it fresh. Cold foam is best right after you whip it.
  • Prep ahead. Mix the cream, sugar, and vanilla in advance, then froth when ready

FAQ's

What's the best way to store it?

Store the sweetened cream mixture (before frothing) in the fridge for up to 3 to 4 days. Froth fresh when you're ready to use it.

Can I make this without a frother?

Yes! A whisk, mason jar, or hand mixer all work - it just takes a little more effort.

What is cold foam?

Cold foam is a light, airy layer of frothed milk or cream that's served cold and typically spooned over iced drinks. Unlike whipped cream, it's thinner and pourable, so it slowly blends into your coffee as you drink it. It adds a creamy texture and a touch of sweetness without feeling heavy.

What drinks work best with cold foam coffee?

Cold brew, iced coffee, iced lattes, and even iced tea drinks all pair perfectly with this foam.

Kori's Tips

  • Don't miss all of our helpful hints, substitution ideas, cooking tips, and other delicious recipes that can be found in our post. Check it out!
  • VARIATIONS: Make this cold foam unsweetened if you prefer it that way. If you prefer cold foam plain omit the vanilla. Use a different extract to create different flavors - mint, almond, and so on. Use store-bought sweetened syrups to flavor the cream.
  • TOP TIPS: Make sure the cream is very cold before frothing. Whipped cold foam does not store well. Only whip what you will need. You can make the sweetened and flavored cream ahead of time, store it in the refrigerator for up to 3 or 4 days, then froth when you are ready to serve.
  • SERVING SUGGESTIONS: Top off any iced drink or coffee. Serve it over fruit for a dessert, add it to smoothies, make a cocktail and serve over iced liqueur. Make salted caramel cream or honey almond milk cold brews.
